Our ‘why’… With a combined passion in investing, scotch whiskey, and entrepreneurship, our team set out to answer the question: ”how can we improve the investment odds and build a profitable model within this asset class?” This led to an in-depth market analysis of value generation with an attempt to mitigate as much risk for investors. Through our research and over a (few) glasses of Scotch, we founded Òr Leaghan.

Company Overview

Òr Leaghan, or 'Liquid Gold,' presents an exclusive investment opportunity in Scotch whisky, one of the best performing collectibles in the past decade. Our mission is to enable independent bottlers and distilleries by operating as a Scotch cask holding house, relieving them (the bottlers and distillers) of the cash flow burden of aging the Scotch casks. In doing so, we improve their cash flow and allow them to focus on their core operations; and over time, enabling independent bottlers to buy casks perfectly aged ready to bottle, shortening the time to consumer.

By becoming a part of Òr Leaghan, you gain access to a distinct investment avenue in the world of Scotch whisky. We act as a bridge between distilleries and independent bottlers, strategically positioning ourselves to enhance the value chain. Our goal is to provide you with a unique opportunity to capitalize on the inherent value created by buying and holding Scotch casks.

At Òr Leaghan, our team employs a meticulously developed statistical analysis to identify strategic opportunities within the industry's existing inefficiencies. We are dedicated to creating value by leveraging our expertise and insights, ensuring that our investments generate optimal returns.

As a testament to our commitment, our General Partners are personally incentivized to exceed a minimum Annualized Rate of Return (ARR) of 9% on each cask, aligning our interests with those of our valued investors. Our tax-efficient structure is designed to maximize dividends to shareholders while adhering to regulatory requirements.

In addition to financial benefits, Òr Leaghan provides an extraordinary experience for investors. Gain exclusive access to our direct cask-to-bottle opportunities, enabling you to enjoy the remarkable flavours of our single cask Scotch bottlings. These limited-edition expressions are crafted with precision, reflecting the artistry and heritage of Scotch whisky.

Moreover, we offer opportunities for commissioned custom bottlings, allowing you to commemorate special events or expand your personal whisky collection with bespoke expressions.

As a valued investor, you also have the option to visit Scotland and witness the physical assets resting in the renowned distilleries. Immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Scotch whisky and witness firsthand the craftsmanship and care that goes into its creation. Please note that travel expenses are covered by the investors themselves.

Join Òr Leaghan and embark on an exceptional investment journey, where our focus on enabling independent bottlers and distilleries, combined with the exclusive opportunity to invest in Scotch whisky, provides a pathway to attractive financial returns and a deep appreciation for this liquid gold.

The Scotch whisky market is a thriving industry, with consistent growth and demand. Despite the recent pandemic's impact on production, demand has increased steadily. A significant reduction in import duties in India, the second-largest export market and the largest consumer of whisky per capita, is expected in the coming years which will only increase demand. The oversubscribed market and limited supply create a demand-supply imbalance, supporting further price appreciation.

The market for rare single malt whiskies has experienced stunning price growth, demonstrating the enduring appetite for new alternative asset classes among high-net-worth investors. Andrew Shirly, Editor of the Wealth Report and The Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, has highlighted this trend, indicating the continued strength of the market. The Scotch whisky market has gained recognition as the best performing collectible of the past decade, experiencing remarkable value growth of 58.6% per year, according to the Wealth Report from Knight Frank. This growth further solidifies the potential of investing in rare whisky as a lucrative venture.

The Scotch whisky market holds immense economic significance, contributing approximately £5 billion to the UK economy and accounting for around 25% of UK food and drink exports. With over 90% of Scotch production sold abroad, the luxury whisky investment market is booming. The market's preference for genuinely rare and unrepeatable whiskies aligns perfectly with the potential for long-term growth, as demand continues to rise while supply remains finite.

India has emerged as the second-largest export destination for Scotch Whisky by volume, with an impressive 16.1% increase in sales compared to 2018, despite the challenging customs duty of 150%. The International Spirits and Wine Association of India (ISWAI) expects the government to reduce the customs duty to a more reasonable level, which would further open the Indian market to greater volumes of Scotch Whisky.

Despite the industry's efforts to increase production levels by 60% over the past decade, the annual production of whisky in Scotland remains relatively small, with approximately 800 million liters produced, of which only around 40 million liters are retained as single malt. This limited supply is juxtaposed against the backdrop of 500 million generic whisky consumers worldwide, resulting in a highly oversubscribed market for Scotch single malt. This imbalance between supply and demand presents significant opportunities for investment in casks.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the Scotch single malt market. The supply chain disruptions caused whisky production for new-fill-casks to come to a halt in 2020. However, increased consumer demand with 20% of consumers drinking more, coupled with explosive retail sales, has further diminished stock levels. This dynamic has shifted the supply/demand balance in favour of cask investment profitability. The market has seen an influx of new investors seeking the safety and tangibility of treasured assets, moving away from risky stocks and low-interest bank-based products into alternative assets.

The global nature of the Scotch whisky investment market offers high liquidity and multiple exit strategies, both within the UK and internationally. With trade levels for whisky continually growing, demand for premium casks has surged, facilitating quick and efficient exits when required. On average, cask-to-cask sales are executed within 4.2 days, although this timeframe can vary depending on the size of the portfolio.

There are several cask investment brokers in the market, all of which offer the ability for an individual investor to own and sell a cask. Those opportunities offer investors the ability to bet on a single (or multiple) casks appreciating in value. Those are very much driven by emotional investment in a brand or based on pressured sales guidance by the brokers. Òr Leaghan advances this concept by utilizing a proprietary algorithm that identifies “strong buys” in the market which historically have corresponded to greater appreciations – all modelled with a 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI). Additionally, each of Òr Leaghan’s hold companies (Cask Co’s) has a multitude of casks within each. So, unlike the brokers, the probability of generating stronger returns with Òr Leaghan lies in a diverse portfolio of hundreds of statistically sorted and chosen casks making up each portfolio, held by shareholder equity ownership in the shared portfolio (rather than a single cask).

By capitalizing on these market dynamics and leveraging our expertise in cask investment statistical modelling, Òr Leaghan provides a unique opportunity to participate in this flourishing market.
